Topic Basics

What do you mean by Topic Basics?

Often when we start learning or researching about a topic, we need to know the basic facts first.  "Reference sources" like encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other general information sources cover the basics of a topic.  Reference sources can be general (i.e. Encyclopedia Britannica) or subject-specific (i.e. Encyclopedia of Social Issues).

Why are Reference Sources Important?

Reference sources are a great way to become acquainted with a research topic before you start finding and reading more technical information on the topic.  They often provide a general overview of to introduce you to the basics.  When using reference sources, remember to pay attention to specific keywords or terminology used, important names, and any sources listed where you can find more information.

Reference Databases

The library subscribes to several online reference databases full of general and subject-specific reference sources (i.e. encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks).
