Finding a Theorist or Theory to Research

There are several ways you can find the name of a child development theorist or theory to research.

  1. Review Your Textbook
  2. Conduct Internet Searches
  3. Review Encyclopedias of Child Development

1. Review Your Textbook

Textbooks can often be a great place to start when trying to identify a theory or theorist to research.  To begin:

  • Look for the word "Theories" in the index at the back of the book to pinpoint pages that discuss theories.
  • Read the Table of Contents to pinpoint a chapter that discusses theories or theorists.

2. Conduct Internet Searches

You may be able to find mention of a child development theory or theorist with targeted Internet searches.  Try searching phrases such as:

  • "Child development theories"
  • "Cognitive development theory"
  • "Emotional development theory"

3. Review Encyclopedias of Child Development
